How to format USB flash disk and mark its partition to be active?

We need to do some preparation job of the USB flash disk before we use PC Win Boot to turn it to be bootable.

We can format USB to be FAT32 or NTFS, so that the startup program could recognize the supported partition type.

Windows PE could only boot from the active partition of the USB, because windows will only load the startup file at the active partition. Without active partition, windows will boot from neither HDD nor USB. So we need to make the primary partition of the USB to be active.

Let’s see how by following diagrams:

First, mark the partition to be active.

We need to open the Command Prompt (CMD) as Administrator.

To do this, we can right click CMD as the following diagram.

While CMD is running, type diskpart at CMD as the following diagram:

Mark the partition to be active by following steps as the diagram:

1. Type “list disk” to list all the disk of the computer. It could help us to identify which is the USB disk.

2. We can see that the USB disk is disk 1. So we type “select Disk 1” to select it to be the target disk. Please pay attention to select the right disk or we may remove the data on other disk by step 3.

3. Type “Clean” to clean all the thing of the USB.

4. Type “create primary”

5. Type “create partition primary”

6. Since there is just one partition on USB flash disk, we could type “select partition 1” to select the primary partition created by us just now.

7. The last step. Type “Active” to mark the partition to be active.

And secondly, format the USB flash disk.

After inserting the USB into computer, we can see it at the file explorer.

We can format it by right click it.

We can also format it at the disk management.

Right click “Computer” and select “Manage”.

Choose the “Disk Management” as the following diagram.

Right click the USB flash disk and select format.

Format the USB to be FAT32 or NTFS.

Click “OK” to confirm. After everything, this usb stick is ready for a bootable usb drive.
